How to create simple images and graphics for social media sharing. In under 5 minutes.

Simply design graphics for your blog and social media profiles

Look, I’m not a designer. I know digital marketing, web development, SEO, etc, but I really don’t know how to design that well. But I want to make beautiful photos for my blog, for sharing on social media, for my e-mail marketing campaigns and so on. And I need to do it fast.

If there was only a way where I could easily create stunning visuals, with no design skills, efficiently and fast… Oh, but there is. If you want to make beautiful visuals for your social media profiles, you’re in the right place.

This is a very quick guide about the tool that I use to create many of my photos for social media sharing – on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and more! It allows me to create a professional looking image, most of the times in about 5 minutes. Absolutely for free.

canva.com

My favorite tool for creating visuals and images for social media.

This is the amazing tool, that anyone can use, without having any Photoshop skills or anything like that. Even without a strong sense of design. Even me!

So, canva.com is an online tool that allows you to use their pre-defined layouts, free images and illustrations and a stunningly simple user interface, to create professionally looking images, for blogging and social media purposes.

Let me show you, step by step:

01Register on canva.com
You probably don’t need much help with this. Visit https://www.canva.com/ and sign-up with your email or Facebook / Google account. Simple as that.

02You’re welcomed to their interface. Click Create a design on the left sidebar.

Here, you can pick choose between popular design types like:

  • Social media posts for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, even Google+.
  • Graphics for blogs.
  • Email headers.
  • Facebook / LinkedIn / Google+ Covers.
  • Infographics.
  • Youtube channel art and thumbnails.
  • And many, many more.

You can also choose to use custom dimension layouts, but for this case, I will make an Instagram post.

03Choose a layout for your post, depending on the message of your post.
I will make a post about this guide, that you are currently reading, so the text will be:
“Want to make stunning images for social media? Use canva.com. It’s stupid simple.”

So I scroll through their premade layouts and select a free one, that best suits my content. This is only a layout, the image, colors and fonts can be changed later.
This is the one that seems the works best my message:

Simple image design tool for bloggers

It has a very highlighted heading and a smaller subheadline which I could see using for the text that I want to implement.

04Change the text
I update the text with the actual text I want to use, add a hashtag at the top of the image and a trytoblog.com “signature” in the bottom right corner. I play around with fonts and in about a minute of work, I have this image.

Create images for social media - for non designersPretty good for 3 minutes of work, eh?

05Choose the background image.
Click on Elements -> Free photos in the left sidebar, scroll through the photos or use the search bar to look for the photo that you think would be appropriate for your image.
I search for various terms like “marketing”, “social media”, “design”, etc. I find an image I like, apply it, adjust the brightness (and maybe add a filter) and BAM, I got my image for my Instagram account in about 5 minutes. Click download and BAM again, that’s it!

Creating social media images without actual designing
Do you like it? You can find this actually this actual image on my Instagram page, as I immediately shared it after I created it.

Optionally, I could play around more with icons, illustrations, icons, charts, fonts, colors and what not, but usually, I just use the visuals to support or emphasize my message, so I don’t go into too many details.

And that’s it guys, about 5 minutes of work for a great social media post. If you haven’t yet, I strongly suggest you to give it a try and tell me what you think about it!

Oh, and feel free to follow me on social media, to see some of the visuals I generate with this awesome tool!
